“I love the fluidity of cotton-satins and the airiness of muslin. We use lightweight fabrics because of my tie to New Orleans and central India. They’re both unusually hot, humid, and sticky for many months of the year.”

Historic Materials

Varanasi Silk

Our partners work with local artisans in Varanasi, a city as old as the Roman Empire with large temples and bustling ghats alongside the River Ganges, to produce our silks. Varanasi became famous around the 16th century for its weavers who wove generous amounts of gold and silver zari (thread) into their silk brocades, which were heavily embroidered with elaborate patterns and designs. Our garments still use this intricate and delicate zari, adding some sparkle to this luxurious material.

Historic Materials

Muslin (Mulmul)

As a very fine cotton, muslin (called mulmul in India) used to be a prized import from India during British rule. Coming from handspun cotton, which is an artisan-focused industry in its own right, it is a thin, breathable, almost weightless fabric that gets softer with each machine wash and tumble dry. Our artisans weave the threads in a “plain weave” technique that is both incredibly soft, yet sturdy enough for long-lasting wear.
